They contain information about these proceedings, including parties’ names, hearing dates, testimony and evidence, and case rulings. Court records are kept in office for a period of time and then disposed of or archived. Most are considered public records, though some may be sealed or have information redacted when copies are provided to the public. In some cases, court records may be sealed and require a court order to access, but many others can be accessed easily online. The current Jefferson County District Clerk is Jamie Smith and the Chief Deputy District Clerk is Jill Wiebusch.

The County Clerk, District Clerk and Justice of the Peace Offices of Jefferson County, Texas provide a Jefferson County Portal online, where records from cases not otherwise sealed or secured by court order can be accessed. These court records may be searched by party name, case number, or date range. Viewing the records is free and copies may be purchased from the website. The offices that host the site are not responsible for errors in these records.

If the court record desired is not available in the Jefferson County Portal, requests may be made in person or by phone or email. When requesting copies of court records, the name and contact information of the person making the request should be provided along with as much information about the record as possible (i.e. the name and birthdate of the defendant or plaintiff, the type of document, case number and/or filing date range). A small fee may be charged for copies of court records.
